Rating Summary
A visceral experience that far exceeds the sum of its parts thanks to some incredible direction, Adolescence manages to be a successful warning of the dangers of allowing children unfettered access to the internet, even if the showrunners don't fully understand why– certainly not as well as they believe the do.

Adolescence follows the case of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for the murder of his classmate Katie Leonard. As the investigation unfolds, the story reveals the events leading up to the tragedy, delving into the lives of Jamie, Katie, and those around them. The mini-series takes viewers through the police interrogation, the reactions of Jamie’s family, and the search for answers about what really happened.

Adolescence Review

Adolescence is a well-executed miniseries that does an excellent job of immersing the audience in the fictional lives of its characters. It’s so engaging, in fact, that it’s easy to overlook how underdeveloped the plot and most of the characters are.”

Each of its four episodes focuses on a particular day or group affected by the events that occur the “evening before” the series begins. Each episode has its own story and perspective, usually centering on a particular character.

Thanks to compelling performances, particularly from creator/writer/star Stephen Graham, who plays the focal character’s father, and a unique one-take approach for each episode with no cuts or edits, the story’s natural oppressiveness hits the audience in a way few television dramas do. However, this distinctive style can occasionally feel overdone and gimmicky.

If you can forgive that the show’s impetus doesn’t entirely match reality, and you have something that you can work on while watching episode 3, Adolescence might be worth the watch.
