Plus, dialing back Zendaya’s MJ (a current rumor) is a win in our book. Her brooding take on the character often felt like a drag compared to the vibrant MJ of the comics. If handled correctly, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a massive win, promising a darker, more compelling Spider-Man story. His proven grit, paired with the potential for a Peter Parker-Punisher clash, is almost enough to stoke the ashen coals of the one-time excitement we had for MCU flicks. Scaling back the overrated Zendaya’s dour MJ is icing on the cake, clearing space for new dynamics. But Marvel must stick to Castle’s roots and avoid sanitizing him for broader appeal and most certainly for “modern audiences.” If they nail this balance, Brand New Day could be a standout MCU hit (something the studio desperately needs).
