In Woke Up In America, Rob Schneider masterfully lampoons much of the madness that’s been infecting our country as of late. Tackling the hard issues like straight guys not wanting to blow female penises, his Woke Up In America may not be safe for work, but it is salve for your soul. Schneider, a self-described classical liberal, probably doesn’t agree with everything that you think and believe, but that’s exactly the point. He doesn’t have to.
Often when more conservative comedians confront these topics, the audience will erupt with clapter. Not so with Woke Up In America. Schneider’s often juvenile “potty humor” is exactly the right approach to such ridiculous concepts. With his well-crafted setups and easy delivery, watching Woke Up In America feels like having a laugh-out-loud conversation with an irreverent and comedic friend.
With such a sympathetic audience, Schneider could have been forgiven if he’d chosen to hammer the radicals all special long. Instead, he gives his audience a chance to catch their collective breath while he pokes fun at other universal themes like the differences between husbands and wives. While he doesn’t blaze any new trails with this, Schneider proves his bonafides by putting his personal, often blue, spin on these traditional topics.
While it lacks some of the craftsmanship offered by the best specials from the likes of Chappelle and Seinfield, and it struggles a bit to get out of the gates, Rob Schneider: Woke Up in America is an important step forward for modern comedy. Like in the days of yore, a top-tier comedian is once again addressing the nonsense of today and doing it well. Rob Schneider: Woke Up in America is exactly what it is supposed to be, riotously funny and absolutely Worth it.
