Rating Summary
Choking on its own heavy-handed identity politics, the first two episodes of Smoke fail to capitalize on some pretty sensational source material.

Set in the fictional town of Umberland in the Pacific Northwest, Smoke is inspired by the true-crime podcast Firebug about serial arsonist John Leonard Orr. The miniseries follows Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton), a former firefighter turned arson investigator, and Detective Michelle Calderon (Jurnee Smollett), who team up to track down two serial arsonists terrorizing the region. As they investigate, their pursuit reveals a complex web of secrets, suspicions, and personal struggles, with one arsonist using a “divide and conquer” strategy by setting fires in supermarket chip aisles to strain emergency services, while the other’s identity and motives remain elusive, leading to a tense cat-and-mouse game.
