Rating Summary
Sweetwater doesn't quite plumb the depths of drama as some other similar sports/discrimination films, but its excellent performances and historical importance combined with a complete lack of sanctimony make it a pleasant watch. Moreover, it stands as stark contrast to what many modern day race grifters try to sell to our youth today.

Sweetwater” (2023) tells the inspiring story of Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, a Harlem Globetrotters star who broke racial barriers to become the first African American to sign a contract with the NBA. Set in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the film follows Clifton’s journey from his days dazzling crowds with the Globetrotters to his historic signing with the New York Knicks. Despite facing significant discrimination and obstacles, Clifton’s talent and determination help pave the way for future generations of African American athletes.

WOKE REPORT

Fair and Balanced
  • Sweetwater does a great job of not caricaturing racism. Some white people were portrayed as racist at a time when real racism existed in America, while others were downright heroes.
