James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy is shaping up to be more than just another reboot of the Man of Steel. According to comic writer Mark Waid, we’re getting a familiar, and for many fans, beloved face: Krypto, Superman’s superdog. Waid, a heavy hitter in the comic world with work on Kingdom Come and World’s Finest, spilled the details during the Capes and Lunatics podcast. Gunn’s playful yet respectful take on the DC universe seems set to deliver something new while paying homage to the classics.

Waid summed it up with a mix of excitement and humor, saying, “The movie has a dog in it, a superpowered dog with heat vision.” Sure, it’s a lighthearted addition, but Krypto’s presence will likely stir up fond memories for longtime fans.

This is the first film in Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe, with David Corenswet stepping into Superman’s boots and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The cast list goes deep, too—Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Nicholas Hoult rumored to be Lex Luthor. It’s a star-studded effort to expand the DC superhero roster, and with Gunn at the helm, the tone promises to be energetic and fresh, while still nodding to the source material, like Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman.

Scheduled to hit theaters in July 2025, Superman: Legacy kicks off DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. But while Gunn’s playful style might be a refreshing change from Zack Snyder’s dark and brooding take on the character, there’s reason for caution. The pendulum could swing too far the other way, leaning into camp and silliness. After all, it didn’t take long for Richard Lester’s Superman II in the early ‘80s to go down that road, swapping depth for laughs. Only time will tell if Gunn strikes the right balance between fun and reverence or if this new chapter risks losing what makes Superman iconic.

I’m not a big comic book fan myself, but I heard a piece of wisdom from those who are: Just because your favorite character is featured in the book doesn’t necessarily mean you should buy it. Comic book companies are notorious for using marketing gimmicks such as putting in fan-favorite characters where they don’t belong in order to boost the sales of failing properties.

I personally have nothing against Krypto the Superdog. The 2006 cartoon series that aired on Cartoon Network was cute, undemanding and put a smile on my face. On the other hand, the Scooby Doo movie “Scooby Doo and Krypto Too” was a wasteful but otherwise harmless piece of nostalgia trash. So we’ll see.

“Hey, look at what we put in!” is usually code for “This will last ten seconds.” Think “Gay Lefou!” or “first lesbian kiss!” Frankly, I’ll show up to see Nathan Fillion finally take his place as the fan-favorite Green Lantern casting — assuming that isn’t a ten-second “Hey, look at who we put in!” credits stinger.
